Taking Good Care of Your Body
To God, our spiritual health is more essential than our physical health, but that does mean that God wants us to be unhealthy, live an unhealthy lifestyle, or suffer from diseases. The Bible says in the book of 3 John 1:2,
“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” ESV.
While you may be spiritually healthy, you also need to glorify God through your physical health. The Bible teaches us how we should handle our bodies in a way that pleases God.
While you fight to look and feel the best way daily, what motivates you to do so? Is it the size 4 dress you’ve dying to wear for years, you battle with a weight-related medical condition, the wanting to feel young again, or that upcoming party?
There are various reasons why you should endeavor to take care of your body. Have you ever stopped to think about the fact that you’re not your own? That your life was bought with a price, and you are to glorify God in all you do – and with what you do with your body too if indeed you’re professing to be a Christian. Before you think of any other reason, this should be the first reason you take your time and energy to correctly care for your body.
Caring for your body glorifies our Maker, it displays an excellent testimony to others, and it gives you the strength you need to do God’s will, preaching the Gospel. The sole purpose for our living here on earth is to glorify God; if you choose to go after an unhealthy lifestyle, to eat in an unhealthy manner, not to practice self-control, not to exercise, and to be careless about your own health, you are choosing not to honor God.
This passage is a question for all believers to answer. When Jesus Christ left for heaven, He told us that he would send the Holy Spirit to reside in us. So, every believer’s body is a house to the Holy Spirit. You wouldn’t walk into your church and throw dirt on the ground, would you? Your body is the church of the Holy Spirit, so choose what you eat and what you do with your body. The way you take care of your body shows how you honor God in your life.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I want to thank you for your death on the Cross of Calvary and thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to us. Forgive me for being careless about your Temple in the past; help me do away with unhealthy habits and habits that defile Your Temple. Help me live by your word and glorify you always through my actions, words, and thoughts.
