How to Deal with Disappointments

Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

What happens when our prayers aren't answered as we desire and become tired? Is disappointment a natural result? Disappointment comes in different shapes and sizes. We all pass through disappointment for various reasons. Feeling disappointed is not a sin or only for the ungodly. How we act at this time and handle it is an important issue. Disappointment is familiar to humanity; sometimes, it's challenging to choose which biblical characters best illustrate it. If you go through the Bible, you would see that Christians went through many disappointments and challenges.

Deep down, most believers think that following Christ should offer them a distinct immunity against trouble. We're like Peter in the Bible, who reminded Jesus, "we have to abandon everything to follow you." Maybe we haven't abandoned everything like Peter, but we have made certain profound sacrifices. Shouldn't your sacrifice and love for God give you a free pass? I am sure by now you already know the answer to that question. As we are battling with our private pullbacks, the unbelievers seem to be excelling. Most times, we wonder why they are doing good, and we are not; most times, we end up questioning God. We continue to fight our way through disappointment and loss and wonder what's going on.

After all the hurts, frustration, and disappointment, the question you should be asking shouldn't be "Why, Lord?" but instead, "What now, Lord?" This is a hard lesson to learn and a tough habit to adapt to.  I know how tough it can be to ask, "What now, Lord" when your heart is tearing apart, you’ve lost someone or something dear to you, or when your dreams are shattered. Your life begins to take a new shape when you start asking, "What would you have me do, Jesus?" Of course, you would still feel disappointment, pain, and anger, but you would also learn an important lesson that God is ready to show you what he needs you to do next. He would also equip you with everything you need to come out victorious.

We need to pour our heart out to someone; how do we get someone for that? Psalm 55:22 says,

Give your burdens to the Lord. He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
— Psalm 55:22

Take your heartaches and despair to Go; if we allow them to pile up, it will lead to discouragement. You can also go through the book of Psalms 31, 102, and 109 in your leisure time.

Prayer: Father Lord, I thank you for always been there by my side. Thank you for never allowing the enemies' plans to manifest; I thank you for your unending mercies toward me. I hand over this situation to you, Lord; what would you have me do, Lord? Speak to me, Lord. I incline my ears to your word.
